Summer is the perfect time to make some simple crafts and get the kids involved.  Kids of all ages will enjoy these clever crafts.

Heather, from WhipperBerry, was planning an activity for her youth at church and came up with a version of water dodge ball.  She decided that it would be fun to kick the game up a notch and create some colorful and fun sponge bombs for their water dodge ball tradition. She used sponges, a mop and some drawer liners – all very durable materials.

Summer Crafts

Alicia of Mayfly made super simple tin-can lanterns, perfect to use on camping trips. They are so easy and fast, and they are really stunning after dark. Just use some old coffee cans, nails, hangers and some adult supervision.

Summer Crafts

The awesome girls from How Does She? are here to show us how to make the coolest homemade bubble blower! Tip: Don’t let them blow too hard or the rag will pop off. A light steady gust of air will produce bubbles to make your little ones squeal.

Family VacationsIt can be hard to take a tropical trip or a European vacation when you have a family, mainly because the costs of flights can really add up when its more than you and your spouse traveling. So why not take your family somewhere in driving distance, and leave the hassle of price behind? Here are three U.S. states that are perfect for family vacations.

1. New Jersey – N.J. is a great state for family vacations! First and foremost, there is the Jersey shore. The beaches all along the Jersey coast are clean and peaceful. Secondly, Jersey has some great boardwalks! Point Pleasant Beach and Wildwood Crest both have awesome boardwalks that have tons of games and rides your kids will love! Is there something fun for adults to do to have a night out away from the kids? Of course there is! When you go to Jersey, you have the option of going to Atlantic City!  You also have the option of going to New York City for the day with or without the kids. If you are near New Jersey, you should definitely give it a try for a family vacation!

2. Virginia – Virginia has more than meets the eye! You can take your kids to Virginia Beach. Virginia Beach has great restaurants and plenty of family resorts right on the beach — it is a perfect spot to take your kids. Virginia also has a Busch Gardens. Busch Gardens is a really great amusement park that your kids will love! It is clean, it has awesome rides and it also showcases a variety of cultures! Teach your kids about different countries while having fun at the same time! Speaking of shows, do you enjoy dinner shows? Virginia has dinner shows that re-enact the Civil War. Have your kids learn some American history while enjoying a great meal! Overall, Virginia has a lot to offer for a family vacation. Make sure to take your family if you get a chance!

3. California – Closer to the west coast? The best state to visit by far is California! There is so much you can do on a summer vacation with your family while in California. You can take your kids sightseeing! Go to Sunset Strip in L.A. and also visit Hollywood while in L.A. There is a good chance you could see some celebs! Take your kids to Disneyland! There is not one child out there that does not want to go to Disney; make sure you give your kids that experience. Do your kids love animals? Take your kids to the San Diego Zoo! They are guaranteed to have a blast seeing a bunch of really cool animals. On top of that, California has a ton of beaches you can take your family to and great places to eat as well! If you are nearby, or even if you’re not, California is a state everyone should make the effort to visit!

So why not this summer, take a road trip to one (or more if you’re feeling up to it) of our amazing states? Our great country has so much to offer and see. Take a week in the summer to explore some of that greatness by visiting one of many U.S. states!

Soft Pastel Baby Shower

Baby Shower

Congratulations to my friend who just had a healthy, handsome baby boy! It seems as if just yesterday I hosted a baby shower for her, and here he is!

I designed the overall theme after being inspired by old-fashioned organic wooden toys, which I found in Washington D.C. on one of our street shopping outings. For my friend’s shower, I had envisioned pale yellow and grey color combinations, which seemed like an interesting creative departure from the traditional baby blue palette. These two otherwise basic toys – a yellow giraffe and a grey elephant – served as the thematic basis for the shower tablescape and atmosphere. Find what inspires you and think about the future mother to be – her style and personality, things and colors she likes! Then go ahead, and be bold in choosing the creative direction, theme and colors for the occasion.

When planning a baby shower, it is perfectly alright to make it your DIY project. You can also have fun doing it. Alternatively, you can order the printables from one of the websites to make it more uniform and color-coordinated. There are a lot of options available – the fonts, shapes, and colors, and you can also personalize with your friend’s name, date of the shower and the gender of the baby. There are plenty of colors, patterns, and cartoon characters to choose from; anything that will work with the theme and colors you came up with.

Decide on the Menu

The menu has to be simple but offer the guests some variety; think vegetarian, seafood and meat options. Choose the menu that’s easy to prepare and can be eaten without forks and knives. It creates a relaxed, no-fuss required atmosphere.

menu

2

Savory Bites

Small savory bites like my Chicken Roulettes can be served hot, cold or at room temperature. They are simply delicious, and the texture perfectly lends itself to any serving temperature.

3

Slice up some bright bell peppers and blanched asparagus spears, and serve them crudité style with spicy ranch sauce in individual shot glasses.

4

Sliders are another excellent way to feed the crowd, and who doesn’t like mini-burgers anyway? Mine were seafood burgers made from a combination of shrimp, scallops and squid, all mixed in the food processor for some seriously delectable treat. Serve them with a slice of tomato & lettuce and some spicy condiment on a tiny challah bun, and watch even your most mannered, sophisticated guests lick their fingers with delight!

5

Sweet Treats

For the expectant moms that like to have dessert for two, go all out and create a beautiful dessert table with cupcakes, macaroons or home-made Panna Cotta with Passion Fruit Puree.

6

Guaranteed to satisfy even the most voracious sweet tooth!

Baby Shower

A Special Cake

The cake is always a centerpiece of any baby shower, and thus, it has to be a showstopper. Our two-tiered baby shower cake was designed by the cool Duet Bakery in Brooklyn. Artfully crafted in keeping with the animal theme, this cake incorporated all the fun elements we had at the table like hand-appliqued giraffe and elephant wooden toys, as well as the alphabet cubes.

Baby Shower

It played off the color scheme of pale yellows, greys and white colors! This two-tiered wonder was really fresh and equally incredibly enjoyable to eat as it was to gaze upon.

Baby Shower

What to Drink

Even though flutes of fuzzy champagne or delightful sweet cocktails are totally appropriate at the baby showers these days, I decided to serve freshly squeezed lemonade instead. Make it extra special by serving this thirst quencher in individual glass jars with personalized stickers (mommy’s baby shower, date of the occasion and who is expected), I guarantee that it will taste so much better! Tie a rustic twine around the bottle’s neck with a “Best Wishes” tag and color-coordinated straws for added impact. Keep miniature bottled water on display as well for those who prefer plain aqua.

11

Flowers with Personality

To stay consistent with the theme, my friend from Blooming Bears, the company which specializes in floral sculptures, designed the adorable giraffe and floral alphabet cubes that spelled BOY and made a terrific centerpiece for the table!

flowers

This is a very unique way to bring more excitement and a greater sense of festivity to the event. The guests couldn’t stop gushing about this arrangement!

Baby Shower

Pom Poms are a Must

Pom poms are an easy way to decorate the space. They are somewhat time-consuming to assemble but are very inexpensive and add a multiplicity of dimensions to the event. If you’ve been following my blog, you probably know that I like to suspend objects from our crystal chandelier. Find a way to incorporate the pom poms in your space. If you are hosting the shower outside, hang them from the trees in your garden.

Game Time

Before mommy-to-be begins the gift opening ceremony, have some fun with the guests by playing a couple of fun, easy games to elevate the entertainment aspect of the experience. My friend Vivian asked all the guests to bring their baby pictures. She displayed them on the pin board and asked the mom to be to figure out who was on the picture. My 1st grade portrait was the hardest to guess! Cheers to that!

Guest Favors

Party favors are an ideal way to thank your guests for joining you and the mommy-to-be to celebrate the beginning of a new life and the new chapter in the couple’s life. The personalized body lotion at our baby shower was adorned with a bird on a birch and the date of this joyous occasion.

SUNsational Summer!

Inspiring Strategies for Success by Friends and Experts You Can Trust

child on the beach

Keep yourself and your kids burn free this summer by taking a few tips to heart. No one is immune from sunburn and skin damage; even those with darker skin tones need to be careful to avoid pain now, and complications later in life. A good majority of sun damage happens in childhood and adolescence.

Invisible ultraviolet rays are harmful, and are just as present on foggy or hazy days as they are on sunny days. In fact, kids play longer when it’s cooler and pleasant, so be even more mindful on those days as normal cues to get out of the sun will be less evident than on blazingly hot days.

UV rays also reflect off a variety of surfaces like sand, water and even snow, so hats blocking the rays above won’t necessarily protect from the rays bouncing off other surfaces. UV rays are at their peak between 10am and 4pm, so take extra care to keep kids out of the sun during that time, or take extra measures of protection.

In addition to the general rules of avoiding excessive exposure, always check with your physician or pharmacist if you or your kids are taking any kind of medication. It may cause extra sensitivity when your skin is exposed to light. Certain medical conditions can also be exacerbated by sun exposure. Apply bug spray and sunscreen at different times, so they don’t interfere with the effectiveness of each other.

Sunburn can appear between six to twelve hours after the exposure, and pain will be most intense during the first day. Sunburn results in pain, redness and warming of the skin. More advanced cases result in fever, blistering, headache, chills and overall feelings of illness. Even without a burn, the skin can still be sustaining harm and potentially long term damage, especially since each exposure builds on previous ones. Adults may suffer from cancer, freckles, wrinkling or toughening of skin.

For red, warm, and painful burns, cool compresses or cool baths will help relieve some of the pain. Acetaminophen can also do the trick – just make sure to check the label or consult your child’s pediatrician for the appropriate dosage for their height and weight.

Call the pediatrician immediately if your child feels generally ill, has chills, headache, fever or blistering. Remember, a sunburn must be treated in severe cases just like any other serious burn. There are times hospitalization is necessary, and if blisters become infected, antibiotics may be in order. Dehydration can lead to heatstroke, so it is better safe than sorry. As is often the case, burns can happen on holidays or weekends, so take advantage of your local urgent care or emergency room if you need to.

Here are some other tips for a pain free summer of sun:

  • Always use sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15. Apply it 15 to 30 minutes before going outside.
  • Reapply every hour, especially if in the water. NO SUNSCREEN IS WATERPROOF.
  • Wear the lightest weight clothing possible with long sleeves and long pants, if appropriate.
  • Use beach umbrellas to create shade.
  • Wear hats with wide brims.
  • Keep babies under 6 months out of direct sunlight. (If adequate clothing and shade are not available, sunscreen may be used on small areas of the body, such as the face and the backs of the hands).

5 Best Apps to Keep Your Kids Healthy and Active

$

Teaching kids how to live a healthy lifestyle is often a frustrating task. Exercise is tiring, vegetables don’t taste good, and going to the doctor is scary. It’s no secret that kids love apps though, and there are many entertaining and informational ones that help teach kids the importance of a healthy lifestyle. With a wide range of apps that teach kids how to eat a healthy diet, exercise efficiently, and monitor their health, staying fit becomes vastly more rewarding to kids.

fitness

FitnessKids – iOS ($2.99)

FitnessKids is an app designed to motivate kids to engage in physical activity while having a great time with their friends. The app teaches kids over 25 fun exercises that are both beneficial and fun. Kids won’t even realize they are exercising as they copy the moves displayed on the screen while the colorful visuals and backgrounds stimulate their attention. Competitive scorekeeping is one of the app’s best and most unique features, offering kids the ability to set records in certain exercises and then vie for better scores and times. There are multiple difficulty levels to ensure that the app doesn’t stale quickly.

smash

Smash Your Food HD – iOS ($2.99)

Smash Your Food HD is an informative app that helps children learn about the true contents of what they put into their bodies. If your kid has a sweet tooth, this app will help them understand how much oil, sugar, and salt they are actually taking in every time they snack. The app is designed to work for each specific individual that uses it by measuring children’s exercise level and age. The app then calculates the target values that each child should consume each day. Children will learn how to measure the amount of oil, sugar, or salt in foods and once they answer correctly, they get to see the food gleefully smashed before their very eyes.

inside

Inside Your Outside – iOS ($4.99)

Inside Your Outside is a Cat in the Hat app that whimsically takes kids through the human body to teach them about the main functions of each body part. What sets this app apart is the quality that Oceanhouse Media has set as a standard for their Cat in the Hat apps. The pictures are bright, interactive, and informative. There are tons of diagrams to help kids further understand what they are learning, and the book even comes with a built-in narrator for kids who cannot yet read. This app continues the timeless legacy started by Dr.Seuss’ classic books for children while adding a new layer of interactivity.

Super Stretch Yoga HD – iPad (Free)

Super Stretch Yoga HD helps teach kids beginner-level yoga with a fun and interactive program designed to promote an overall healthy lifestyle. Videos are provided to teach each move, but they also tell the story of an animal that will keep kids delighted while learning new moves. This app is surprisingly well-made for a free download, and the quality and variety of the animations are consistently impressive. This app is a great way to exercise with your children. Since the moves taught are relatively simple, the app is a great launching point for a family of yogis!

Kids Mode: Free Games + Lock – Android (Free)

Kids Mode is a brand new app just released on Samsung smartphones that locks phones so that kids cannot access important or sensitive data on the phone. The twist is that it allows children to access age-appropriate games that they can play while the phone is locked, acting as an efficient deterrent and fantastic gaming app. The games are customizable to suit various ages, so a seven-year-old isn’t stuck playing the same games as a three-year-old.

While it may be hard to pass on the occasional Happy Meal, the following apps promote informed decisions that can help every child embrace a healthy lifestyle. The most important factor in your child’s health is YOU, so enjoy these apps with your kids and work toward a long, healthy life together.

Raising Children with Pets

cute puppy

Raising children with pets is beneficial to your child as it teaches responsibility in caring for the needs of a living creature. Having pets also plays a part in teaching children about compassion, empathy, and kindness while simultaneously teaching them to respect animals and nature. Whether you are an expectant parent or a parent of small children you will be happy to know that raising children and pets together is indeed possible.

There are certain precautions, however, that must be taken to assure baby and pet safely coexist. Here are some tips that new parents can follow to assure harmony in the home.

1. Always supervise baby when a dog is in the house.

Try to keep your baby at a higher level than your dog as many dogs see a baby on the floor as a littermate to roughhouse or as prey due to the baby’s small size. For this reason, a parent should never lay a baby on the floor near a dog—large breed dogs especially– and should absolutely never exit the room leaving baby unattended. Using doggy gates or shutting the dog in a separate room while baby is playing on the floor, along with constant adult supervision, is vital to preventing tragedies.

2. Keep pet feeding area away from disturbance, such as in a laundry room, mud room, or basement.

An animal is territorial by nature, especially with food. This can cause even the most gentle dog or cat to strike out if disturbed while eating; in fact, it is the number one cause for dog bites. To prevent tragedies teach your child to never touch but to leave the pet alone while it eats. Keeping the feeding area in a quiet, remote place helps prevent problems.

3. Teach your child to never run up to or pet a strange dog.

Babies and small children are naturally drawn to animals but a strange dog may not react well to your child’s sudden approach and could bite out of fear. Teach your child to never run up to a strange dog but accompany them to ask the owner for permission to pet the dog. Let the dog sniff your hand before petting it and then show your child how to gently pet the dog on the back, never in the face or on the head.

4. Teach your child how to properly handle an animal.

Your small child may see your pet as a stuffed animal and may not realize that his or her play is too rough. Don’t allow your child to carry a cat or a dog if they are unable to do so safely. Show your child how to pet the animal gently and never allow your child to pull ears or tail, or hit the animal. Especially, never let them ride on, sit or lay on the pet.

Taking simple precautions from the very beginning allows for children and pets to live and grow together in a safe environment. Raising children with pets is a wonderful opportunity to teach, nurture and delight a child–and they’ll have fond memories to last a lifetime.

The Perfect Pumpkin for Cooking or Carving

$

http://www.dreamstime.com/-image21495316

Pumpkins are to Fall as Santa Claus is to Christmas. Pumpkin production, a whopping 1.5 billion pounds, reaches its peak in October as Americans prepare to celebrate Halloween. As pumpkins have become ingrained into our Halloween and Thanksgiving cultures, the number of creative ways to use and enjoy them has increased.

Grow Pumpkins:

A seasonal, warm weather crop, pumpkins require warm soil that holds water well and at least one bee hive per acre for adequate pollination.

Milk-fed Pumpkins:

Question: Why feed your pumpkin milk? Answer: To grow bigger pumpkins.

Question: How can milk help? Answer: Although milk does not have any properties that directly increase pumpkin size, it keeps your pumpkins healthy and free of disease.

There are three ways to milk-feed your pumpkin:

Wick: Pour two percent milk with a tablespoon of sugar into a small covered pan or bowl, insert one end of wick or string into a small slit in the pumpkin stem and the other into the pan which is in a small hole next to the pumpkin.

Injection: You can also use a syringe to inject the milk into the stem.

Pour: Use milk as fertilizer by mixing with manure or pour a cup of milk around the roots daily.

Pick a Perfect Pumpkin:

A mature pumpkin will be difficult to scratch, bright orange, have a green stem and be fully hardened.

A shiny skin indicates that it was picked too soon; also check for scaring, soft spots and bruises.

For Eating: Look for a pumpkin which feels heavy for its size, as it will tend to have more dense, edible flesh. Popular “pie pumpkins” include the Small Sugar (also known as Sugar Pie, New England Pie, and Northern Pie), Winter Luxury, Cinderella, The Cheese, and Golden Cushaw.

For Painting: The best pumpkins for painting have smooth skin and shallow ribbing. The varieties Orange Smoothie, Cotton Candy, and Lumina are excellent for painting.

For Carving: Choose a pumpkin with structural strength, flat bottom, sturdy stem, and ability to last several days after being carved. It will sound hollow when tapped.

Carve Pumpkins:

Carving pumpkins can be accomplished with a variety of tools such as regular kitchen knives.

However, in recent years inventors have patented tools made solely for this purpose; in addition to the cutting tools, some kits contain design templates and detailed instructions.

Choosing specialty pumpkins such as giant, miniature, unusual shapes, or white pumpkins (spooky) can add to the originality.  The most popular carvings are of the Jack-O-Lantern variety.

To carve a good Jack-O-Lantern, you need grease pencils for pre-marking; patterns — your own or those you can download from the internet; gutting spoons for scooping; a long, thin-bladed boning knife to cut out the top and other large pieces; and a very sharp small paring knife for detail work.

Pumpkins for Food:

Pumpkins have become a part of the cuisine of many countries throughout the world: Roasted with other vegetables in Australia and New Zealand, in tempura in Japan, for ravioli stuffing in Italy, as a cooked vegetable in China, and served as a sweet dessert in Thailand, India, and the Middle East.

Eat only when ripe.

Fresh pumpkin can be boiled, baked, steamed, micro-waved, or roasted and is frequently mashed or pureed before combining it with other ingredients.

Desserts include pumpkin pie, crème brulee, mousse, gingerbread, cupcakes, and cheesecakes.

Other favorites include the pumpkin martini, sweet and sour pumpkin, and pumpkin soup.

Pumpkin Activities:

Pumpkins can be carved, painted, dressed, lacquered, or decorated with a variety of beads, sequins, ribbons, and fabric. Paint and marker pens can help to create interesting and scary faces.

American pumpkin culture has grown to include a variety of family-oriented events in towns across the country. Check local listings for Pumpkin Festivals, Weigh offs, Pumpkin Carving and Painting Contests, Pumpkin Chunking, Pie Competitions, etc.

Store and Preserve:

Store in a cool dry place (45 to 60 degrees F) for up to a month or refrigerate for up to three months.

Extra pumpkin for eating can be frozen, canned or dried for longer storage. Freezing is the easiest and results in the best quality product.

Carved pumpkin will begin to dry and shrivel as soon as it’s cut. To slow down the dehydration process and deter the onset of mold, coat all cut surfaces as well as the entire inside of the pumpkin with petroleum jelly. Coat the eyes, nose, and mouth or any other design you have carved out.

Health Benefits:

Pumpkins:  Fat-free, cholesterol free, a good source of vitamin C and an excellent source of vitamin A, the bright orange pumpkin shouts that it is loaded with antioxidants.

Pumpkin Seeds:  Excellent sources of fiber and rich in vitamin A and potassium, are also packed with protein, iron, copper, manganese, magnesium, phosphorous, and vitamins E and B.

Pumpkin meat has also been used as a remedy for snakebites and a poultice treatment for burns.

Pumpkin Proverbs:

One cannot manage too many affairs, like pumpkins in water, one pops up while you try to hold down the other. Chinese Proverb

The pumpkin gives birth and the fence has the trouble.  Moroccan Proverb

The pumpkin vine never bears watermelons.  Creole Proverb

Wacky Facts:

In 2007 Boston, Massachusetts, shattered New Hampshire’s previously held world record for Most Lit Pumpkins by lighting 30,128 pumpkins at one time.

Nassau, Delaware holds the national record for Pumpkin Chunkin distance by using an air cannon to propel a pumpkin over 3/4 of a mile

A number of movies have starred pumpkins, notably Cinderella’s pumpkin chariot.

yellow lab

For thousands of years, dogs have been domesticated and bred to have qualities humans deemed suitable–a literal transformation from wild animal to man’s best friend. They are our companions, friends, family, and service dogs. That feeling we get when we see our furry friend jump with joy, give us a kiss (and accidentally hit us with that wagging tail!) is well known. The health benefits of dog ownership, however, is often less talked about. Here, we round up the scientific evidence of how dogs can significantly enhance health and quality of life.

Dogs Enhance Physical and Mental Health
• Dog owners reap amazing cardiovascular benefits, including lower cholesterol and reduced blood pressure.
• Dog owners have a lower likelihood of visiting the doctor.
• Dog owners have a lower likelihood of being on medication for sleeping and heart issues.
• Dog owners have a lower likelihood of health deterioration after losing their significant other.
• Dogs help fight depression.
• Dogs allow humans to have responsibility, purpose, and support.
• Dog owners feel safer outside when walking their dogs.
• Having a pet can save you money on health care due to less frequent doctor’s visits–a result of greater, more stable health.

Dogs Have Big Benefits for Children
• Children who have dogs at home are more active. This leads to a more physical and healthier lifestyle.
• Children who owns dogs generally become more nurturing adults.
• Children with pets have higher self-esteem.
• Children with pets have an enhanced immune system and experience less allergies than children who are not around pets.
• Dogs make children feel safe.

Dogs In Hospital and Nursing Homes
• Dogs helped patient become more responsive, alert, and happier.
• Residential dogs in nursing homes resulted in less fatigue, less depression, and increase in vigor for patients.
• Residents of nursing home socialized more with each other when dogs were present.

Dogs Can Prevent Illness and Injury
• A study showed that dog owners experience less minor injuries than non-dog owners.
• Pet owners have lower risk factors for coronary heart disease.

Dogs Can Speed Up Recovery From Illness
• Dog owners are more than 8.6 times more likely to be alive after a heart attack than non-dog owners.
• Pets allow humans to cope better after learning they have a major illness.
• Pets allow humans to feel like they have a sense of support before, during, and after their illness.
• Recently widowed women with dogs are on less medication and experience less symptoms of disease than their non-dog owning counterparts.

Dogs Provide Unspoken Therapy
• Dogs help soldiers cope with post traumatic stress disorder.
• Some programs allow dogs to be trained for the disabled by prisoners. This help boost the prisoners’ self-esteems and teaches them nurturing skills.
• Dogs are a great stress relief for students during exams.
• Patients with schizophrenia feel safer and less stressed with friendly dogs around.
• Dogs provide love and relief from loneliness.

Dogs Help the Disabled
• Dogs are used as service dogs for the blind, deaf, and people with other disabilities.
• They don’t just provide a physical benefit to the disabled, but they also provide companionship and emotional support. They allow the disabled to feel more independent and help with their mobility and confidence.

Medical Detection Dogs
• Some dogs have been trained to look for complications such as epilepsy, diabetes, and cancer due to their acute sense of smell. A dog’s nose is estimated to be from 100 to 100,000 times more sensitive than a human nose.

Dogs Help People Be More Social
• Dogs make you get out of the house.
• By walking more, you meet more people and socialize more.
• A study has shown that you appear more likeable if you appear with a dog in a photo than you would with flowers.

It is believed that the reason for why dog owners are generally healthier is because they tend to walk more often and more regularly than non dog-owners. While dog ownership offers countless health benefits, man’s best friend has also been used by humans for other purposes, such as war dogs, rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, and hunting dogs. Of course, dogs aren’t the only pets that provide these health benefits. Cats has also been known to help humans, but the study of dog benefits to humans has been more extensively researched. One study has even shown that people who stare at aquariums with fishes in it experienced lower blood pressure and a decreased heart rate than those who were staring at a blank wall. Both regular and casual interactions with animals can improve the physical and mental well-being of humans.

From being used for protecting farm animals and helping humans hunt for wild animals to being our friends and healers, there is clearly a mutual relationship between humans and dogs. This hypotheses and theory explains why and how our bonds with our dogs and pets are so strong.

The Teal Pumpkin Project for an Allergy-Friendly Halloween

For 1 in 13 kids in the U.S. who have food allergies, Halloween isn’t the carefree, candy-laden free-for-all that most kids eagerly await. That’s because many traditional treats have the potential to cause an allergic reaction – which can be life-threatening – for children managing allergies to nuts, milk, wheat, soy and many other foods.

But this Halloween, Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) is working to help make October 31 a fun and safe day for every trick-or-treater by launching the Teal Pumpkin Project nationwide. Inspired by families in East Tennessee, the Teal Pumpkin Project allows children with food allergies to enjoy Halloween without fear.

FARE is encouraging families to paint a pumpkin teal and place it – and a free, downloadable sign – in front of their house to indicate they will have non-food treats available on Halloween. Handing out inexpensive non-food treats (e.g., glow bracelets, stickers, pencils) is a great way to include all children in trick-or-treating. More details about the project, and a free sign, can be found on FARE’s blog.

halloweensignthumbTips for Managing Food Allergies on Halloween

1. Enforce a “no eating while trick-or-treating” rule, so that you have time to review all food labels.
2. Avoid candy and treats that do not have an ingredient label.
3. Always have an epinephrine auto-injector available, if prescribed.
4. Keep in mind that the mini-size, fun-size, or bite-size version of candy may contain different ingredients than their full-size counterparts. Make no assumptions, and read all labels carefully.
5. Keep the emphasis on the fun, rather than the candy.
6. Remember that a candy that has been safe for your child in the past may now have different ingredients. Read the label, every time.

How to Save On Halloween Costumes, Candy and Fun

Halloween is now reported to be the 2nd most expensive holiday of the year! Even though we don’t exchange expensive gifts on Halloween, it is easy to rack up big bills on costumes and candy. The good news is that there are many easy ways to save money on Halloween expenses without compromising on the fun.

crayons

Be creative. It can cost $35 to $50 for many popular children’s costumes at party stores, which adds up quickly if you have more than one child. With a little creativity, you and your children can make easy costumes with items you have around the house. You can also shop at a local thrift store to buy vintage clothing to use as costumes.

Research ideas on-line. My favorite costume idea resource is FamilyFun.com, which lists 100 easy and inexpensive costumes you can create at home — whether you have a few hours or only a few minutes to put an outfit together.

Don’t overbuy. If you live in a neighborhood, you will most likely be buying candy to give out on Halloween night. The challenge is to avoid overbuying — who wants bags of leftover candy when the kids come home with far more than they need?  If you are nervous your stash won’t last, consider buying Hershey’s Kisses or similar chocolate candy that you can use later for holiday baking.

Look for coupons. You can also save money on candy and costumes by watching for store sales and coupons in the Sunday coupon circulars or in your mailbox. Find coupons in the Sunday newspaper ads throughout October.

Carve a pumpkin. The easiest decoration that is also fun for kids is carving a pumpkin together. For just a few dollars, you can create a memorable annual tradition with your child and decorate your front porch or window at the same time. Save the seeds and find a recipe for roasted pumpkin seeds, as well.

Get crafty. You can find plenty of inexpensive Halloween decorating projects from books in the library, local family magazines distributed free at libraries and schools.  Easier projects include making ghosts to hang in the window made out of string, glue and waxed paper. Doing a project with your children will be much less expensive and far more memorable than shelling out $100 for decorations at the local party store.

Save on admission. This is the time of year for pumpkin festivals, Halloween fairs, hayrides, haunted house tours and more. Many schools and churches offer free festivals and fairs as family-friendly alternatives on Halloween.Prices for these family events vary widely, from free to as much as $20 a head. Check the local event websites or the calendar section in community newspapers and magazines to find inexpensive events.  Be on the lookout for admission coupons in your local paper and check the web sites of Festival sponsoring organizations to find printable coupons for reduced admissions.  Your local grocery store may sell discounted tickets for these events either on their Web site or at their customer service counter in the store.

Top 5 Tips for Adopting the Right Dog

walking the labradoodles

October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and Jenna Fernandes, CEO of CareBooker.com, the “Open Table” of family and pet care services, knows how important dogs are in the family. As a parent to her two dogs—a Min Pin named Scooby and Great Dane named Casper— Jenna offers 5 tips for adopting the right dog for any family (or even adding a second one!):

1. Make Sure You are Really Ready: Adopting a pet is not a decision that should be taken lightly. It’s important to realize that adoption is a commitment to taking care of the dog you choose for their entire life – through sickness and health, chewed shoes and “accidents” on the carpet. Only after you’ve decided that you can commit to being a lifelong (for the pets lifespan) pet parent, then you should continue on your quest to find the perfect furry mate.

2. Stay Open-minded: Make sure that the type of dog you think you want and the type of dog you really need are the same. Many people think adopting a puppy is ideal, however adopting a puppy can be a lot more work than adopting an older pet. Stay open-minded about which breeds will make an ideal companion and take into consideration other traits such as temperament, energy level, and health. If allergies are a concern in your family, you should also consider adopting a dog that does not shed or a dog with shorter hair.

3. Do Your Research: Petfinder is a great place to start your search for a new pet—I recommend starting with a local search so you can visit the shelter in person to communicate with the shelter staff/volunteers about what you really want in a pet. Take several of your favorite dogs for a walk and see how they behave outside the cage, providing them crucial time to normalize so you can get a better idea of their personality beyond the initial “I’m so excited to be outside my cage!” moment.

4. Consider Fostering First: If you’re not sure what type of dog you’re looking for, fostering is a great option.  Not only does fostering pets save lives it’s also a great way to get to know a pet over a longer period of time than you would if you just visited the shelter. Many foster pets become “foster failures” after being adopted by the families who were originally only planning to provide them a temporary home.

5. Meet the Family: Before you adopt, make sure all the stakeholders in your life meet the pet you’re interested in making a permanent part of your family.  This includes any other animals in your family such as dogs or cats who will be living with this new addition. Understand that there will be an adjustment period when the dog first moves in. After this, it’s time to make the adoption official and be on your way to a happy life with your new furry family member.

Protect Your Furry Family Members from Winter Chill

When summer turns to fall and fall to winter, not only do the seasons change, but so do the needs of your beloved pets. As important as it was to guarantee pet safety in the summer heat, it is crucial to note that colder weather also brings health and wellness risks for pets. Dr. Mitsie Vargas, a Veterinarian with the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA), provides seasonal pet tips that can improve the winter wellness of your pets.

1.      Be Mindful of new objects in the Home. Fall means back to school, which also means new items appear in the house. Treat pets like curious toddlers and place harmful objects out of reach.  This can also include indoor plants that are actually poisonous if eaten.

2.      Nutritional needs change. Talk to your veterinarian about your pet’s specific nutritional needs during the colder months. Outdoor pets, for example, may need to eat more than indoor pets in order to generate enough body heat to remain warm.

3.      Acknowledge your pet’s tolerance for Physical activity. As the weather becomes colder, and pets need more of their energy to remain warm, it is sometimes necessary to cut back on your pet’s physical activity.  Depending on the thickness of your pet’s coat, it is advised to cut their time outside short.

4.      Early Detection is Key. Take your pet to get their winter wellness exam early! Summer is a great opportunity for pets to be outdoors and with outdoor exploration comes exposure to a feeding ground for lots of bacteria and diseases. These diseases may not appear in pets right away, thus taking precaution at the start of the new season is advised.

Colder weather also means the fast-approaching holiday season.  Give the gift of safety to your pets. The American Veterinarian Medical Association has provided holiday tips to ensure a happy and safe holiday for your pet.

  1. Should I be mindful of the excess of Holiday food in my home? Yes. One of the main challenges that the holiday season brings is the excess of food available around your pet. Be sure to keep people food in places that cannot be accessed by your pets. Be upfront with your guests, and ensure they do the same.
  2. Can my pet enjoy the same holiday treats that I do? No. Pet owners are urged to keep human treats away from pets. Specifically treats that contain chocolate, xylitol, grapes/raisins, onions and other foods that are toxic to pets.
  3. Can winter decorations be hazardous to our pets?  Yes. The holidays bring lots of seasonal home decorations, such as candles, decorated trees, and potpourri. Pet owners are urged to make sure pets are not left alone in the decorated rooms as to avoid danger.
  4. Is tinsel specifically hazardous to cats?  Yes.  The shine of tinsel can easily attract the attention of a curious cat. There are serious medical consequences if the cat eats any of this tinsel. It is suggested, that cat owners leave tinsel off of the tree all together.
  5. Is it okay to place my holiday plants anywhere around the house? No. As many pet owners know, pets like to chew on anything in reach. Indoor holiday plants such as mistletoe, holly, and lilies are actually harmful to pets. These plants should be kept out of a pets’ reach.
  6. Do some pets get scared around house guests? Yes. The holidays tend to bring lots of family and friends to one’s house. Some pets get scared or excited around a large group of new faces, thus it is advised that they are placed in another room. This can also help with tip number 1, in that guests will not end up feeding the pets.
